Sue's Sweat Shop Sew Fest

Posted by Sue B on March 11, 2010 at 3:40 AM

Who do you know in the Sacramento (Roseville) area .... We're having our first Sew Fest this Saturday - March 12th 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sunday - March 13th  1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.  .... contact me: Sue @ 916-784-6719

I heard about Dress a Girl 2 weeks ago and I was so touched ... cried when I saw the videos and knew I had to be part of this ... I did something like this when I was 10 yrs old ... making little layettes for children in the Congo for a missionary relative.  I shared with a friend who called immediately when she got my email and said "I'm in!"  ... that started our exciting journey.

I went to a local Goodwill .... asked if I could have a discount ... was first told they couldn't ... but I walked out of there with $50 worth of pillow cases and sheets that were probably $100 according to their tags..... Called my friend Candy and said lets hit another Goodwill ..... we missed "senior discount" day ... however the gal got so excited about what we were sharing with her and I had already made a few dresses to take around and show .. that we walked out that day with at least $200 worth of cases/sheets/curtain material .... and paid $65 ....

While telling the gal what we were going to be doing ... a gentleman heard us talking and shared he didn't have much money but wanted to be a part of what we were doing and gave us $11.00   we told him that would be dressing about 8 girls .... I went to another thrift store today ... they let me have them for about .30 to .50 each .... I was sharing with the sales gal what had happened at Goodwill and there was a man there with his wife ... as I was walking out he asked if he could give me some money and handed me $20 .... Praise the Lord ..... I'm being blessed before we're even really getting started and know that it is us who will have the greatest blessing.

We now have 115 pillow case washed and ready to go!  My husband is with KLOVE Radio - I sent a dress with him to show at work and he came home tonight with a sack of pillow cases & sheets ... with more to come tomorrow.  (he was funny tonight ... he has a special green pillow case that he travels with and he couldn't find it and came in my office asking, "has my green case already become a dress?"  ... no! )

I'm already blessed to be with a company that has the mission to Nourish Our World, Reliv International and the Reliv Kalogris Foundation where we're feeding over 43,000 children a DAY ... knowing that these little dresses will clothe their little bodies and make them feel loved as we're feeding their body with desperately needed nutrition....I think this is a touch of Heaven.

 "Have sewing machine will travel!"

Sue, Isn't it wonderful how just a comment makes things so contagious and people really do want to help. Thanks for the post and suggestions!

I cannot wait to meet you. What a girl. You have so much going and such a giving heart. I just came across the Dress a Girl web site and am excited to get started. We are starting a new sewing club and the dresses will be first on our list. We also will be teaching young girls in our area how to sew and mend and have a loving spirit. After reading your post I must speed up and get things moving a little faster. I do have a niece in Sacramento but she does not sew. "yet". Thank you for your encouragement.

I am inspired. Our sew fest is this weekend. Do you have any do's and don'ts for me? I am expecting about 50 woman and children.

Helen ... I'm so sorry ... I hadn't checked the site in a few days ... probably because I'm into pillow cases myself!
Some TIPS: (1) It makes the sewing easier if things are ironed ... so those who are ironing are very important to make the sewing go faster (2) be sure to secure the elastic several times ... not at the very end of the elastic as I found sometimes it frayed and broke (3) If doing ribbon or a shoe string in the casing ... be sure to secure it in the middle of the casing so it won't pull out ... they wouldn't have a means of re-threading it (4) if using double bias tape at the armholes ... you'll notice 1 side is a little less and I found it's best to put it towards the front so when you're sewing close to the edge - you'll be sure to catch the backside (5)if a case is thin ... I put a strip of another sheet to just give a privacy so it didn't get seen through (6) actually this should be #1 ... pray for these little girls that they will know they are loved by you and JESUS ... and remember, "Well done - good and faithful servant!"

Welcome
