Zimbabwe Wrap Skirts for Women of Zimbabwe

Posted by DAG West Texas - Ingrid Simmons on January 18, 2012 at 5:25 PM

NEWS FLASH for Zimbabwe sewers: If you are making skirts for our Moms and Moms-to-Be we have found a BETTER SKIRT than one with elastic. It is simply  66" of 45" Fabric, hemmed of all raw edges. It's a WRAP skirt; the 66" will go around Mom and the width (45") will be the length of the skirt. The skirts can be worn and tied in many ways; this is what the ladies there wear on a daily basis - IF they have them. These WRAP skirts will be much easier to pack and will have more than one use. The Zambias will go over the wrap skirts to hold babies close to Mom! I am so excited about this addition to  dresses for Zimbabwe! Please message me if you have questions! Thanks!

We are a quilting group in Spring Texas. We would like to send our contribution of dresses made from quilting fabric to you for the Zimbabwe mission. How late can we send them to you for the June trip? We would like to have a couple of more sewing days if possible. We will meet once a month to sew.
Thanks, Delores Stem, for the Sew 'n Sews

Delores, I used to live in Spring! What a happy coincidence! Of course, I would love to have your dresses for the Zimbabwe trip! How exciting! I'll need your dresses by the end of April. The trip leaves the end of May (as soon as school is out) and the travelers will need lots of time to get everything packed (they take medical supplies as well as many many other items). If you need the pattern for a pillowcase dress you can find it here on the website; or go todressagirlaroundtheworld-va.blogspot.com for the beginning of a new tutorial. I'm just tickled you found us and look forward to hearing from you. May I add your name to my DAG West Texas email list? I'll keep you informed of upcoming mission trips after Zimbabwe. Also, visit the Facebook Page of Dress A Girl West Texas...lots of fun stuff and information on there! Again, welcome!

Hi Ingrid...are there any ties on the skirt, or is it just a big rectangle of fabric? Thanks much!

No ties, just a big rectangle - 66" x 45" exactly. It's called a zambia and it has multiple uses for the women in Zimbabwe.

Are you Delores from the Spring quilting group? If not, let me know who you are so I can add you to my email list, if that's okay. Thanks!
